7 reasons why old Shillong was amazing!

You think Shillong is beautiful now? Can you imagine its beauty back in the day,  before 1897?

  1. Serenity

Yes, there were no fancy buildings, no development what so ever, but the serenity of the place was over this world as told by our ancestors usually during story time.

  1. Real Polo Matches

Polo ground a place where everyone is familiar with, got its name from the once renowned British-era Polo Race Course, where the British once played the game of Polo. In 1876 after Shillong was declared the capital of the North-East Frontier the British built the polo ground where Polo was popularly played and was surrounded by a beautiful race course.

  1. Largest Natural Golf course

A few years after the polo ground was built the first golf course in the North-East was constructed with 9 holes which later was converted to 18 holes. It is now one of the largest and natural Golf courses in Asia which is considered as the ‘Gleneagle of the East’.

  1. Maharani and Maharaja

The transportation back in the day was mainly on foot or horses. People could not travel to far off places without a headache. The first two cars in Shillong were run by Mr Ali, one was called ‘Maharaja’ and the other one was called ‘Maharani’. They were the ones that transported the British officials from Shillong to Guwahati.

  1. Hospitable people

Of course the best hotel in Shillong – Hotel Polo Towers was not there then, but there were many tiny guest houses and perhaps the oldest hotel of Shillong – The Peak Hotel at what is now called Quentin Road.

  1. Black and white pictures

We scoured the internet and found a treasure trove of images from albums gathering dust in ancient cupboards….Thanks to all of them!

  1. Sacred grove

The British knew ahead of time that deforestation was going to take a toll on this God given beauty so they started forming many sacred forests in order to protect nature. On seeing all the houses being thatched houses and knowing that Shillong was an earthquake prone area, the British brought the concept of building Assam type houses to decrease the damage.

The video only proves that Shillong is not only an awesome place to live now, it was an awesome place to live even long ago!
